Search engine optimization (SEO) is a little confusing and, because of that, small business owners are often reluctant to devote much time or money to it. I totally understand that hesitancy because I wouldn’t devote much to a marketing initiative I wasn’t comfortable with either. But, in the case of SEO, it’s definitely worth doing some research and figuring out what you can do on your own to optimize your website and/or committing some of your marketing budget to AMBD’s best-in-class search engine optimization services.
To help small business owners and entrepreneurs understand the basics, and importance, of SEO, I recently put together an “SEO Basics” handout and figured I’d post some of the insight here as well.
Search engines have two major functions: searching websites and building an index, and providing search users with a ranked list of the websites they’ve determined are the most relevant. The algorithms search engines use to determine relevance are extremely complicated, but, basically, they: look for pages that contain high-quality, relevant info about the searcher’s query; determine relevance by “crawling” Web content and evaluating what is pertinent; determine quality in a number of ways, including the other sites that link to a page.
Web traffic is driven by the major search engines Google and Yahoo!. The higher a site is on the search results page, the better the click-through rate and ability to attract users and customers. The top few search results receive much more traffic than results down the page, and exponentially more than results on later pages.
SEO is a marketing technique focused on increasing a website’s visibility in search engine results. Many factors contribute to search engine results and SEO experts understand how to design and populate sites to improve their organic search engine rankings and increase Web traffic.
